RuhrortPlus: We are making Duisburg-Ruhrort eco-friendly and good living

A neighborhood becomes fit for the future.

The RuhrortPlus initiative was launched in 2021 under the name "Urban Zero" and is committed to the sustainable, eco-friendly development of the Duisburg district of Ruhrort. In addition to the founding partners GEBAG, Haniel and duisport, RuhrortPlus unites local partners to jointly promote the livable design of the district. In close cooperation with citizens, companies and the city of Duisburg, practical solutions for a sustainable urban transformation are being developed and implemented. The aim is to make Ruhrort a role model for eco-friendly and livable urban development - in Duisburg, NRW and beyond.

CLIMATE & ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS

Why do we have to act?

The climate and environmental crisis is becoming ever more noticeable. Year after year, scientists report new record levels of global warming, loss of biodiversity and increasing acidification of the oceans. Cities - urban areas - only take up three percent of the earth's terrestrial surface, but consume two thirds of the energy and, together with the industry based there, are responsible for the majority of environmentally harmful emissions: this is where we need to start. Every individual can play a part in countering this development. We need to rethink our actions and take a holistic approach.

More about RuhrortPlus
Analysis, Reduction, Compensation

How do we want to do it?

The aim is to ensure that human activity in Ruhrort no longer has a negative impact on the environment. At the same time, the development of the district should bring Ruhrort residents a better quality of life.

We proceed in three steps: Analysis, reduction and compensation. After the analysis and the preparation of the overall Ruhrort life cycle assessment, the reduction and compensation follow. But what is behind these processes? Find out in detail about the individual steps.

The approach
PARTNERs

Who is driving the project?

The initiative was launched in 2021 by the Ruhrort-based company Haniel, whose headquarters have been located in the district since 1756, and Greenzero, a company active in the environmental sector. The municipal housing association GEBAG, the port company duisport and Haniel are involved in the project company founded in August 2022. However, the ambitious project can only succeed as a joint venture. For this reason, the project team was expanded in March 2025 to include other strong partners and the "Förderverein RuhrortPlus e. V." was founded together with the City of Duisburg, Duisburger Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft (DVV), Wirtschaftsbetriebe Duisburg (WBD) and Sparkasse Duisburg. This strong association pursues the goal of implementing innovative solutions for eco-friendly city life together with local people. In addition, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and numerous well-known companies, organizations and scientific institutions have already been won as partners. RuhrortPlus welcomes further partners and investors. The participation of the citizens themselves is particularly crucial to the success of the project.
